Located in an old manufacturing building that had been converted to bland apartments, this space suffered from a boring plan with awkwardly proportioned rooms. Working with the client, a single woman who wanted the feel of a downtown loft, Katz Architecture opened the apartment by carving a study/dressing area out of an over-sized bedroom. The bathroom was gutted and remodeled to take advantage of a central pipe chase that broke up the room, yielding space for a luxurious custom vanity. A generous closet was added deep enough for built-in cabinetry.

With a few simple moves, the feel of the apartment was completely transformed. The new study/dressing area, with 10 foot high sliding oak and glass doors, emphasizes the height of the space. The generous bathroom, provided with custom mill-work vanity, has loads of storage and a modern feel. The front closet is now deep enough for lots of clothing and the display of an impressive collection of shoes.
