A Bigger, Better Kitchen
Three rooms became two in this suburban remodel. The empty-nester owners loved the house and neighborhood, but needed their home to work better for just the two of them.
That meant getting rid of space they didn't need, and transforming it into space they do need. So the formal living room was the first space to go - it become the casual dining area you see in the photos above.
The existing "formal" dining room was isolated and rarely used for dining (see "before" photo above), while the kitchen was in the center of the house, used every day, but far too small.
The solution? Knock the wall out between the kitchen and dining room; move the dining space to the old living room, and expand the kitchen into the old dining room.
With the addition a wine refrigerator, a built-in TV, and a new door to the deck outside, the new kitchen/dining room is spacious and comfortable, and the center of daily life in the couple's home.
A few other changes were made to the home in addition to this dramatic upgrade, including a new media room, conversion of an existing family room into a den, expansion of a bath, and a new family entry.
