Activists' Headquarters
Mexican Hat, Utah is a place of intersection. While it appears open and empty, there is a lot going on. North of the San Juan River, the land is federally, state, or privately owned. South of the river is the Navajo Nation. However the Navajo do not believe humans can own land. The river itself is federally regulated by the United States government and the Navajo Nation does not have rights to utilize it. Thus the border is the southern edge of the river rather than the river itself. Within the Navajo Nation, there are several uranium disposal sights that are managed by the US government. There have been many environmental impacts in the area because of this. Due to the social, political, and environmental forces in the area, I designed a center where activists can meet with stake holders, organize movements, and spread their message. It is located in the center of the Mexican Hat town, just off of US-163, providing easy access.
