Albany New Home

In 2013, this family was given devastating news: Their beautiful 5 year old girl would not live to see her 15th birthday. Before that, she was going to lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, and just about every other ability. This changed everything in their lives, and it was clear they needed a very special house that could see them through this trial physically and spiritually. They bought a 5,000 sf triangular lot with a municipal sewer easement running through the backyard. Our unique geometric solution allowed the family to have three bedrooms, a primary bath, and a Universally Designed bath so that their daughter’s wheelchair wouldn't prevent them from all being together. Landscape architecture was integral to the design concept, with the articulation of the rear facade engaging with a blend of California and Chinese plants and a bamboo forest. The client, an animator at Pixar Studios who could visually endless possibilities, and who was under enormous strain, says this about the experience: “Making me happy again was no small feat. Our architect did it, and our daughter ...who is 16 years old now... spends every day with us enjoying the serenity this house creates.”
