We removed the ancient range and overhead microwave to make this more of a kitchenette. There is a refrigerator, ice maker and sink. This area is meant to be more of a bar/gathering place and the range made it feel too much like the standard kitchen.

Several posts were removed by taking out the dishwasher that used to be in the island. The posts contained electrical and plumbing hookups but were not structurally necessary. The way it opened up the space is incredible.

This is the only lakehouse I've ever seen that people didn't gather on the deck. All of the deck boards had been removed so only the framing remained when we first got to the house. It was completely unusable and there were so many trees, you could barely see the water.

When the old tub/shower unit was removed, it was discovered that the water shut off valve for the water line coming into the house was behind the shower wall (in the far right corner), completely inaccessible. We relocated it.

The old handrail was a splintery rope that the original homeowner (new homeowners father) loved. He loved all the rustic details and was disappointed that we got rid of the rope. So the homeowners gave it back to him.

The cabinets here are MDF. Since this is a secondary residence and the home might not be heated or cooled consistently, wood cabinets could have swelled and shrank with the varying temperatures. MDF cabinets don't have mitered corners and won't end up in cracks or chipped paint.

The beams on the ceiling had to be stained just slightly to cover some water damage that had occurred years ago. The ceilings used to be textured panels that made them feel much lower and overbearing.

There used to be a door to the garage just to the left of the current microwave, at the start of the stairs. We moved that to the other side of the stairs so we could enlarge the cabinet space and make this feel like it's own room.
