Beachfront Condo

This 3,000-square-foot beachfront condo in Santa Monica is a vacation home for a family that lives in Mexico.

This project spanned the period of one year and five months, during which I met the clients in person twice, and the rest of our communication was done via email.

The scope of the project consisted of the kitchen, three bathrooms, the laundry room, all of the furniture being reupholstered, new flooring throughout, and redesigning the home using found objects and furniture that the clients had collected over the years.

The kitchen in this family-friendly vacation beach home has bamboo cabinets, brushed stainless steel hardware and appliances, porcelain tile flooring to mimic the look of slate, a frosted glass desktop and backsplash, and fun pops of bright color throughout.

Surf Green Granite countertops paired with the frosted glass backsplash is an unexpected combination. Both surfaces are extremely easy to clean and require little to no maintenance.

An undercounter wine refrigerator is housed to the left of the writing desk. We added a temperature-controlled fan inside of the cabinet to provide ventilation.

The writing desk in this kitchen overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It's the perfect place to eat breakfast and reflect.

When decorating consoles or bookshelves I like to position items of similar style together. This draws the eye to each group of items, one at a time, instead of creating a sense of clutter.

The living area in this condo is one large open space, so we broke it up into three seating areas to make it feel more inviting and relaxing.

Creating three separate seating areas within one large open room allows people to have their own space to read or relax. By not having a television in the common area, it encourages quality family time.

The formal dining table doubles as a game table in this vacation home. The dining chairs are on gliders, so the chairs can easily move around, without damaging the sea grass carpet.

Designing with Antiques
This fun, bright powder room is one of the first things you see as you enter the home. Wallpapering the ceiling, and the oversized mirror, makes the space feel larger.

A bookshelf to the left of the Victoria + Albert soaking tub in the master bathroom acts as a library, provides towel storage, and houses a pullout hamper. The walls and countertops are honed Crema Marfil marble to create a calming environment.

The bookshelf in the master bathroom was painted Benjamin Moore Taiga, and the countertop and wall tile was Crema Marfil Marble. We added a mirrored panel to the side of the cabinet to reflect light, making the bathroom brighter.

Pebble tile runs down the back wall and onto the floor to create a waterfall effect in this two-person shower.

By keeping the guest bedroom neutral, it allowed the colorful Jack-and-Jill bathroom to stand out without being overpowering.

The Jack-and-Jill bathroom was updated in a laid-back beach style for a teenage brother and sister to share, yet feel worlds away from one another with their own separate vanities.

A second vanity replaced a bathtub in this Jack-and-Jill bathroom. A custom wood framed oval mirror hangs from the ceiling in front of the glass block window, creating the ideal lighting conditions to apply makeup in the daylight.

Enclosing the commode with frosted glass panels provides privacy in this shared bathroom without making the space feel contained. A color palette of beige, gray and light blue enabled fun, gender-neutral colors to be used for the linens.

Benjamin Moore Mount Saint Anne was the perfect choice for the vanity paint color. The teenage brother and sister each have their own vanities to add personal touches, such as a makeup mirror and artwork.

Combining obscure and clear frameless glass in a bathroom creates visual depth, giving new perspective to the ceiling.
