Bluff House
A Green Design:Build project designed to capture the expansive views and unique site conditions of a limestone bluff overlooking the hills and valleys of northeast Oklahoma. The client’s design goal was to create a “modern barn” that utilized the high volumes of an exposed barn structure and the agricultural inspired framing details with raw material finishes. The structure was sited to take full advantage of passive solar heat gain. A large 15’x15’ insulated storefront glass window system faces east to the expansive views beyond and utilizes awning windows to allow for valley breezes to cool the house during the summer. An oversized glass overhead door faces south and opens to a covered veranda that projects from the house at optimal distance to block any summer sun from entering the home, while allowing the winter sun to project into the entire depth of the interior. The natural light that floods the two story living/dining/kitchen space minimizes any electric light during the daytime. The green features of the home include high-efficiency electric heat pumps with a HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation) system.
