Bright, White, Family Friendly Kitchen
This project was for a young family of four and their dog. The scope of the project included the kitchen, laundry room, mudroom, breakfast area and family room with desk area. The existing kitchen was small and dated, and its location did not allow any views to the backyard. Access to the rear door had to be considered as it is often used as their main entrance.
We enlarged the footprint of the kitchen and created an open concept from the front of the house to the back in order to take advantage of the views to the expansive rear yard. We chose to eliminate the kitchen table area for a built-in solution at an island. The space now has two work zones for cooking and clean-up, seating for six at table height, seating for two at counter height, a desk area, all new appliances, and a clean transitional look.
We narrowed the kitchen a bit in order to take advantage of a jog in the existing architecture of the home- a perfect place to hide the laundry room and mudroom while creating a place for the desk. The new location of these spaces met the demand for a much larger family room as well.
Opening up the large space to create an open concept resulted in a structural issue that necessitated a post to be located in the center of the new kitchen design. We saw this as an an opportunity for a uniquely shaped island that meets the seating requirements of the family while creating a functional cooking area. The structural post is concealed in a small wall that is embellished with tile and a floating shelf, making it purposeful in the overall design and helping to create functional flow around the space.
We used pendant lighting of different sizes from the same collection to create a sophisticated and cohesive look for this large space. The aesthetic of the kitchen is on-trend with the demand for white painted kitchens with grey accents. The new space is bright and functional, thoughtfully designed and family-friendly.
