Brown Grotta House
Designed as an addition to a 19c colonial farmhouse in Connecticut, the house serves as a commercial gallery for American Crafts. An important wish of the owner was to retain the character of the existing farmhouse. A dialogue of opposites thereby ensued, integrating old and new, traditional and modernist, orthogonal order and luxuriant curves. The exterior is composed with familiar elements such as the original window articulation, French doors and clapboard siding. The interior uses a modernist approach to light and space including two-storey spaces, strip windows, a sculptural freestanding, island kitchen and indirect lighting.
Function: The interior is a two-story family room and kitchen with the gallery office on the mezzanine overlooking the main space. The kitchen island is organized with the cooking areas behind a curved canted shield while the open counter is ideal for buffets during openings.
