Fagas House
To maintain the owner's level of aesthetics as well as their standard of living, the condominium was transformed into an open plan with a series of flowing spaces sharing both visual extension and natural light, punctuated by steel sculptural elements crowned with an expressive ceiling.
Form: The dominant given was the awkward series of ceiling pitches and the main stair. Turning this liability into an asset, the ceiling form was emphasized by adding a series of ribs that flow with the contours, accentuating the visual energy in the three slopes. A curved steel light trough provides indirect light to the ceiling and functions as a visual hinge around which ribs pivot. The asymmetrical slope and the ribs became motifs which recurred in the main stair sloped parapet wall and the fireplace ribs and slots. A series of natural steel elements articulate the space in the form of steel faced cabinets, lally columns and details such as the bases, cabinet pulls, fireplace fascia and bathroom sink. The fireplace wall is composed of a floating wrap around plane of silver leaf and a gas fed fire which flickers through a bed of black river washed Japanese stone. Further elements include a jacuzzi inset in a sea of cobalt blue glass mosaic tile, 5" wide American white maple flooring
Function: The 1500 sq ft condominium is designed as both exhibition space for an extensive private collection of American Crafts ceramics and baskets and for entertaining. The need to integrate both functions simultaneously led to the use of generous display surfaces and ample built-in storage. The kitchen is a show piece of steel cabinetry and steel clad appliances. Overlooking the public space is the master bedroom replete with steel headboard and cabinetry. Visible from the bedroom is a large dressing room lined with floor to ceiling cabinetry composed of Formica fronts and
