Glickman Schlesinger Architects was asked to gut-renovate a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment that had not been touched in decades for a husband and wife in their mid-thirties. When shopping for the apartment, the couple needed to stay close to the husband’s work in order for him to easily come home during lunchtime to help his wife, who is in a wheelchair. The only apartments available were in typical 1960’s apartment towers, where the apartments consist of small rooms, narrow hallways, and low ceilings. Glickman Schlesinger's task was to convert this common type of New York City cellular apartment into a spacious oasis to facilitate the wife’s movement. The third bedroom was incorporated into the living space as a dining area, the kitchen was opened and expanded, and hallways and doors were widened. Materials and colors were selected to make the most of the limited daylight available.
