The site for this home is located in a small residential development. The lot is heavily wooded with a south facing slope that connects directly to walking and hiking trails located on land held in conservation. The home was designed for a young couple with two small children. It has 1,900 square feet on the first and second levels, in addition to a walk-out basement.

One simple element served to create a unique home and floor plan. The client desired a porch that would provide protected outdoor space. Instead of a traditional attached structure the porch was recessed into the home between the living and dining areas. This design approach created a south facing courtyard room that is warmed by the sun and protected from wind and rain. During the summer months and warmer fall and spring days, this room is an expansion of the living and dining rooms.
