Cedar Stairs & Landing

This project showcases a beautifully crafted cedar deck addition designed to enhance outdoor living space with a blend of aesthetics, durability, and functionality. The construction includes advanced structural support, premium materials, and code-compliant safety features, ensuring a long-lasting and visually appealing result.

Key Elements of the Project:

1. Planning and Permits:

All necessary permits, city-approved plans, and off-site dumpster fees are managed to ensure compliance and streamline the construction process.

2. Demolition and Foundation:

Demolition of the existing landing, stairs, and railings to prepare for the new structure.
Installation of the Goliath Tech Screw Pile System, with three fully galvanized helical piles for maximum stability. This innovative system ensures a perfectly leveled structure, even in challenging soil conditions, with no delays between installation and the start of construction.

3. Support Structure:

The deck is anchored to the house with a green-treated 2"x10" ledger board, fully flashed, and sealed to prevent water infiltration.
Heavy-duty 6"x6" posts provide robust support, with decorative skirts to conceal footings, while tension ties and Y-bracing minimize movement and enhance stability.
A double 2"x10" perimeter frame, mid-span blocking, and premium Southern Yellow Pine joists add strength and durability to the deck structure.

4. Decking and Railing:

Beautiful 5/4" cedar decking is installed parallel to the house, with a cedar skirt for a finished look. The deck boards are securely fastened with galvanized screws to ensure longevity.
The railing system features approximately 43’ of cedar railing with evenly spaced 4”x4” posts and 2”x4” top and bottom rails. Flat tops and standard post caps complete the classic design, meeting all Minnesota state codes for safety and aesthetics.

5. Stairs and Handrails:

Stairs are constructed with 2"x12" Southern Yellow Pine stringers, cedar treads, and risers, landing on a sturdy concrete pad.
An aluminum grippable handrail with a textured white finish is installed on both sides for added safety and style, enhancing the accessibility of the deck.

6. Painting and Finishing Touches:

All railings are pre-painted with touch-ups after installation to ensure a pristine appearance. The cedar decking is left natural to showcase its beauty, though it will weather and adapt to the outdoor environment over time.

7. Door Adjustments:

The existing door is adjusted to align with the new deck layout, providing smooth access between indoor and outdoor spaces.
