East Jefferson Residence

This suburban split-level home was opened up on the interior in order to connect it to the surrounding garden both visually and physically. A new entry space with steel canopy was added, acting as an indoor/outdoor pavilion. Interior living areas were opened up as one large space, with a wall of windows facing the woods at the rear of the site, and the master suite was enlarged with a cantilevered projection surrounded completely by windows. Previously there was no direct connection from the main level living areas to the rear yard, so a steel and wood stair was added, which flows down from the new rear deck onto the lower terrace. The existing carport was replaced with a garage, and a wood pergola moves from the front of the site to the rear, slipping subtly between garage and house. A wood-slatted fence at the front of the house acts as a screen wall, providing privacy and definition to the front garden.
