Adam Mckinnon Carpentry

Edmonds house

This is an all Walnut stair system with iron balusters. The radius on the inside is eighteen inches which made it difficult to bend both the skirts and the rail. The exposed outside part of the curb wall is fourteen inches wide and the curb wall is four inches thick. The thickness of the wall side skirts are one inch. I like the depth this produced. It feels right proportionately.
Installing a curb wall also eliminated any problems with laying out the balusters. Before, with open treads, the straight treads had room for three balusters while the pie shaped treads only had room for two. And it would not have been possible to keep a consistent distance between balusters. By installing a curb wall we solved that problem and also made the overall feel of the stair grander.
