Entertaining Basement
The owners of this distinguished home wanted a basement remodel that would give every member of the family a space for relaxation and entertaining. They also wanted a well-appointed laundry room, a luminous bathroom for visitors, and a place to celebrate their champagne collection.
The original basement was short and cramped, so we dug down for more ceiling height and added radiant hydronic heat, assuring that this basement would always be warm and inviting. A full home theater system was installed, with the TV mounted on a swing arm alongside a luxurious fireplace, all of which is ensconced by dark custom stained wood cabinetry, adding stylish storage for movies, games and music.
We turned a forgotten space, where pipes, heating ducts and electrical wiring hung down from the ceiling, into a stunning wine cellar to house the homeowner’s prized collection of champagne. The original brick foundation wall was left exposed to complement the new custom double barrel vaulted ceiling, and mahogany racks were designed for optimum bottle storage. No detail was forgotten in this climate controlled wine room, from the travertine stone floors and stereo speakers to the LED lighting that illuminates without adding heat and heavy glass walls for enjoying it from the rest of the basement.
The old laundry room was lacking storage while the new laundry room is well-appointed with cabinets, a dishwasher to help with entertaining, and a table for projects. The laundry room does double duty as an entry for the kids, with storage lockers for their jackets and backpacks, and charging stations for their cell phones and laptops.
A new bathroom was put in under the stairs and welcomes guests with modern aesthetics and a large shower. A Tansu-style cabinet was custom built to maximize space under the stairs, and is a wonderful mixture of storage and display shelves, with a motion sensor for night time illumination. Trim details from the upper floors were incorporated in this modern basement to tie it together.
No detail was overlooked, from the custom made koa-wood surfboard inspired bar, to space for lounging with friends. Every part of this basement remodel is both beautiful and useful, and in perfect balance for this entertaining family!
