First Floor Redo

What a makeover! The first floor got a total overhaul in this project.

The first priority was to open up the entryway. A small coat closet created a cramped, closed off entryway, and also created an awkward staircase to the second level. By removing the closet, we were able to reconfigure the staircase entirely, correcting the inconsistent rise/run, and opening it up to the living room. The new, shaker-style newel post makes this staircase a feature in the space, and the highlight of the home's entry.

The existing living room was updated with new lighting, but the real transformation happened just around the corner. What used to be a small and dark kitchen turned into a large, bright dining room. We built a small addition onto the side of the house to increase the room size and increase the traffic flow between rooms. This gave us a place to put 5 new windows, which became a great focal point for the room. From the outside, the addition looks like it was supposed to be there all along! We also opened up this room to an already existing hallway, connecting the back of the house to the powder room/hall closet/study, which also improves the livability of the first floor.

The crowning touch for the project is the new kitchen, complete with custom cherry (all wood case) cabinetry and all the bells and whistles. The clients fell in love with the granite tops, and they tie the materials and colors in the space together perfect. The flooring is a wood-look ceramic tile, and the addition of an in-floor heat system ensures that the homeowners will never have to deal with cold floors underfoot.
New appliances increase the overall function of the space, including the microwave drawer from Sharp, and a double oven range. The wall cabinets are at varying depths to accommodate dishware of all different sizes. But the cabinets are secondary to the whole wall of windows, which we surrounded with a subtle gray subway tile, all the way to the ceiling.
