Functional Entertaining

The goals of this homeowner for their kitchen design was to have an entertaining kitchen that was truly functional. The kitchen was to be located Western Canada's Wine Country area and they knew they would be entertaining frequently. The Vestabul designer interviewed the homeowners and produced a design to meet their needs. The final design included a functional work triangle for the main cook, a sous-chef space on the island, a curved deep dining bar for guests and lux beverage bar complete with wine storage and built in coffee/cappuccino maker.

The main work triangle including the refrigerator, cooktop, wall ovens and sink is along three walls across the back of the kitchen. In this design the cook is "protected" by the island with no traffic cutting through the work triangle. This makes sure the meal efficiently comes together when...
Functional Entertaining
A small stool area was planned on the end of the island for the cook. This allows her to take a break and enjoy a glass of wine with her guests but still keep an eye on things in the working part of the kitchen.

Recessing the ovens into the corner allowed them to be placed within the main work triangle while not blocking movement between the counters on either side. The cook cannot be checking on things in the oven while working at the gas cooktop.

The homeowners commissioned a custom painted tile mural for the backsplash area above the cooktop. The style works really well with the homes location in wine country.

A bar was a design ask for the homeowners. The Vestabul designer suggested that to make it as functional as possible they make it a beverage bar including space for wine and coffee. A wine refrigerator and open wine rack were designed into the base cabinetry closest to the dining and living rooms....

The great room design of the space is a large "V" shape with the kitchen at the point and the dining room and living room radiating from there. This design is perfect for entertaining allowing openness and separation of different spaces.

The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen. Coordinating millwork wraps around the corner from the beverage bar. By specifying the cabinetry into plastered niches the Vestabul designer keeps the Mediterranean feel in the great room.
