Georgetown Combined Courtyard

A complicated project in Georgetown, DC involved a rooftop terrace and combining neighboring gardens into one beautiful entertaining space.

The client bought the house next door and wanted to combine the two back yards into one fabulous entertaining space. This is the before view of the existing wall separating the two yards.

The neighboring house peeks over the existing wall. The main house rooftop garden had existing container plantings, while the neighboring garden had a gorgeous mature Japanese Maple to preserve.

Wide steps combine the two spaces. The old brick from the wall was recycled to step risers and into the low retaining wall for a seamless look. The mature Japanese Maple in the corner was preserved for is lovely shape and the shade it provides.

A new walkway and steps connect the neighboring house to the courtyard garden. The narrow brick walk between the tow house walls was enhanced with simple plantings and gorgeous recycled ironwork that was original to the site.

Detail of the ironwork fence recycled into wall art. The pieces are stunning, and their texture contrasts nicely with the old brick of the house wall. Vines will continue to grow over the ironwork and up the wall to soften the space.
