The client had just purchased a gorgeous Art-Deco style home in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, DC. The home needed substantial interior renovation and Molly Scott Exteriors was asked to redesign the front entry plantings and the rear courtyard space.

Detail of Front Entry plantings. Care is taken to choose plants that will provide color and interest year 'round. Dried Hydrangea flowers and bright red Nandina berries extend garden color late into the Fall.

The courtyard garden was envisioned as a "jewel"-like space, as important when viewed from inside the house as it is when you're in the space.

The Pennsylvania Flagstone patio offers a soft color palette and makes the greeens in the garden pop. The simple diamond detail provides visual texture for the space.

The mature Camellias were kept to bring much-needed softening for the walls that surround the courtyard. Multiple staircases connect the interior to the garden and it was our job to make a space that felt large and flowed well, despite the multiple transit points.

Molly Scott Exteriors designed a decorative cornice to disguise the existing gutters on the garage. The new cornice reflects details on the main house and unifies the space with a strong horizontal line.

The simple water feature provides a soft sound to disguise the sounds of the city. A zero-grade water feature is a great low-maintenance way to bring water into the garden.
