Historic Horse Farm Master Plan
The owner’s of an existing 78-acre farmstead in Bolton, Massachusetts desired a landscape renovation that respected the historic character of the property, while creating outdoor spaces that were suited to their lifestyle.
The site is the historic Whitcomb Inn dating back to the early 18th century. The owners currently maintain the property as a horse farm with the inn serving as their residence and the barn used for boarding horses.
Some of the goals addressed in the landscape master plan included: screening lights and noise from the nearby interstate; planning for replacement of diseased trees along the historic entrance road; creating a patio and herb garden in the character of the building period; designing a cut-flower garden and creating beds and perennial borders along the stone walls for easier mowing and maintenance.
The plan utilized plant material that is drought tolerant, insect and disease resistant, mostly deer resistant and suited to an 18th century landscape. The patio and front walk materials included brick salvaged from the barn chimney and old pieces of granite salvaged from other locations on the property.
