This rusty chase cover, made from galvanized coated steel did not have much time before it would start to rust through and cause water to get inside the chase and potentially rust the top of the pre-fab firebox.

Remove The Rain Cap - Products

Locate the screws that connect the rain cap to the flue pipe. Most rain caps have three screws attached to the cap. There are also some caps that are a twist off style.

Remove The Storm Collar - Roofing And Gutters

Use a razor and cut the caulk where the storm collar meets the flue pipe. If you are able to remove the storm collar without damaging it, you can re-install it later.

Use your hammer or pry bar and remove the nails holding the chimney chase cover to the wood framed chase.

Now its time to remove the rusty chimney cover.

Apply a bead of silicone to the top of the chimney chase. This will help prevent insects and weather from entering the chase.

Now it's time to place the new stainless steel chimney chase cover on.

Pre-Drilling - Roofing And Gutters

Now that the stainless steel chimney chase cover is in place, pre-drill a hole through the side skirt for your attachment screw. We generally put a screw every 20 inches. So for this chase cover I put two screws on the short sides and three on the long sides.
