This 1920’s lovingly restored log cottage in Hayward, Wisconsin epitomized it’s adopted name Hygge, a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a mood of coziness and comfort. However, the primary entry for this historic log home was far from welcoming with only a small bench and set of coat hooks to greet family and friends.
The new design includes a covered entry as a transition to a generous entry space and large mud room with ample storage for this active family. The original Dutch-style door was lovingly refinished and flanked by two narrow sidelights. In the interior we extended the porcelain floor from the existing space into the new entry and mud room. White shiplap replaced the original T&G pine wall covering and two existing hallway windows were replaced with larger units to bring in additional natural light and garden views.
The exterior took its design ques from existing architectural elements including half log siding, low pitched roofs, field stone details and cedar brackets, and the decorative facia trim was carried to the new addition. Inspired by architect Edwin Lundie we designed large corner posts at the entry that greets visitors to this welcoming space while paying homage to Lundie’s deep understanding of rustic Scandinavian design that he artfully executed throughout the upper Midwest.
