Rustic Wisconsin Cabin

Architect Michaela Mahady, Partner with SALA Architects in Stillwater, Minnesota, designed this welcoming Northern Wisconsin Cabin. The design inspiration came from the historic buildings found in our National Parks. We wanted to use a mix of wood siding including waving siding, dark natural stain colors, dry-laid stone and dramatic roof lines caped in red.

For the home’s entry, Mahady designed three options for consideration. The clear winner was this elegantly designed barrel vault with bead board ceiling to create this welcoming outdoor room. Custom Alder French doors and chunky entry lights complement the graceful shape of this design.

Michaela Mahady created A 2400+ sq. ft. cabin that feels like it grew out of this heavily treed lakeside lot. Her design features a small screen house connected by a breezeway and two car garage with second story storage area, affording the owners plenty of storage and work shop space.

The adjoining screen house features a wood-burning fireplace, dramatic natural stone veneer and beautifully detailed timber and trim detail.

Mahady designed the lakeside elevation to feature dramatic gable roof lines, a beefy trellis under the arched great room window and large exposed timbers all combining to enhance the rustic flavor of this home.

Stone also plays an important role in creating the desired character for this project. This stone terrace shown here uses a dry laid technique using Chief River veneer and full range random cut blue stone deck.

The garage was the first building to be built. It allowed us to experiment with siding treatments and color.

Mahady extended the rustic feel to the home’s interior using the same dry laid stone for the two story fire place, wide trim with tall wainscoting and large timber details throughout the homes main level.

The open plan of the main floor is unified by our selection of hand scraped cherry floors, textured plaster walls, dark stained timber details and tong and grove pine ceilings.

The screen house connected by the breezeway extends the home’s living area and creates a cozy space for entertaining on warm summer nights.

Easy maintenance quartz countertops and mildly distressed cherry cabinets were selected to create a warm and welcoming kitchen that’s highly functional and easy to maintain.
