Boardwalks are extremely high traffic areas with the sun constantly weathering each piece of wood. The common softwoods used for boardwalks will not last and rot quickly. The Miami boardwalk needed a strong wood that would patina beautifully into a silver color while not splintering. Ipe was the only choice for the boardwalk.
