Lake Effect | Kitchen Remodel & Addition

The relocated kitchen in this suburban Virginia home captures a direct site line to the scenic lake beyond. Creating a stairwell addition to the rear of the house also allowed for enlarged family and dining rooms.

DRINKS ANYONE?
The appliance wall ends with a striking display cabinet. Visible from the kitchen’s window-front eating area, cherished silver and crystal pop against the cabinet’s coordinating dark interior while the stainless-framed, glass-front doors bounce light across the space.

LAKE EFFECT.
The adjacent living room (which shares the kitchen’s exposed brick wall) centers on a gracious fireplace seating area overlooking the midcentury modern home’s lush surroundings.
LAKE EFFECT.
Using the same gray LVT plank flooring helps visually connect the new downstairs foyer and relocated kitchen above. The oak stair treads and landing echo the hardwood floors in the upstairs living space.
WALK THIS WAY.
Enlarging the family and dining rooms meant co-opting space taken up by the existing stairwell. Relocated to a clever addition along the back of the house, the new open-tread staircase now embraces an updated downstairs foyer and leads upstairs to the kitchen eating area.
