The goal was to create a seamless addition that preserved the home’s mid-century character while introducing contemporary comforts. The new second story needed to integrate naturally with the existing structure, providing a luxurious master suite, a spacious home office, and improved circulation throughout. Large windows and clerestory openings were a priority to maintain the home’s strong connection to nature, allowing ample daylight and unobstructed views. Additionally, the homeowners wanted to enhance the home’s exterior presence, ensuring it blended harmoniously within the Lake Forest Park neighborhood.
To achieve these goals, the design retained the original footprint while introducing a carefully planned second story. The new level houses a master suite with a spa-like en-suite bathroom and walk-in closet, alongside a home office strategically positioned to capture panoramic views. Clerestory windows were extended to the upper level, preserving the mid-century aesthetic while maximizing light and openness.
To further optimize the property, a Detached Additional Dwelling Unit (DADU) was introduced. After extensive feasibility studies and zoning analysis, the design team developed a three-bedroom unit that complements the main house. Positioned above the existing carport, the second floor of the DADU was designed to maximize living space and capture scenic views, providing a private yet connected extension of the property.
The result is a striking, modernized home that respects its mid-century roots while offering the comfort and sophistication of contemporary living. The seamless second-story addition blends naturally with the existing architecture, and the carefully curated material palette enhances both the interior and exterior aesthetic. The home now offers an improved living experience, with bright, open spaces, breathtaking views, and a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The addition of the DADU expands the property’s potential, providing a versatile space for guests, extended family, or future rental opportunities.
