Lake Washington Kitchen Remodel
Scope:
The clients wanted to retain the feel of a cabin atmosphere while remodeling their kitchen. They enjoy entertaining and wanted more natural light, and more interactive space between the living room, dining room, and kitchen.
This cabin sits closest to the water of all other homes that sit on Lake Washington; a very special location.
Interior Designer: Raina Henderson Interiors
Challenges:
This home was purchased as a flipped property, and while all looked to be in good shape when they first moved in, as the clients began living in it, details about shortcuts or jobs that could have been done more completely became apparent.
This home was originally built as a log cabin, then remodeled to bring in more craftsman influence, then later flipped. Overall, this home needed care, attention, and more comprehensive designs and plans to suit the client’s modern lifestyle.
One of the results of the many remodels over the years were several roofs lines and bearing walls between rooms. Our main question and challenge became: How do you open up space and bear the different loads, without creating a whole bunch of additional work, while also give an unobstructed view of the water?
Retaining, without damaging, the original plaster cove ceiling in the living room was a feat, given all the shaking that happened during both the demo and rebuilding phases.
Solutions:
The kitchen was opened up with the use of recessed beams and no visible posts to obstruct the view. Bench seating with custom cushions were added along the windowed walls to give ample space to sit in what was once a small dining room. Additionally, more functional sitting space was added in the living room as well.
A large island with lots of space and fine appliances outfit this kitchen beautifully. Fresh natural light floods into the entire open, airy space.
Results:
A professionally designed and built kitchen of their dreams now exists and works well for daily life as well as for entertaining parties of all sizes.
A person can now be anywhere in the kitchen, living room, or dining area and enjoy a view of the water. There is much more interactive space for both family and guests.
