Madison Park Custom Cypress Barn Door
The client reached out to Bevel looking for a solution to help block noise from the living room. They had recently purchased the home and found that noise from the tv transferred to other areas of the house. The doorway was a large cased opening with a step down into the living room. After discussing the pros and cons of different types of doors, they decided that a barn door made the most sense for the space. Rather than just going with a simple painted door, the client hoped to find a gray/brown wood species with character. After doing some shopping, they fell in love with the history and characteristics of sinker cypress wood. Sinker cypress is a name given to trees that were logged in the early 1900's and transported down rivers to coastal mills. Occasionally, the dense logs would sink in the river and become covered in sediment preserving the wood. Depending on the proximity to salt water, the logs can vary greatly in color from a reddish brown to dark brown with hints of green and blue. The valuable logs are now located using radar and pulled up using cranes. The barn door lumber sourced from a mill in coastal North Carolina were it was carefully selected for the desired gray and brown colors and paired with hammered black hardware and a low VOC water based finish.
