Make+House (artist home, studio, ADU)
Make+House is a new construction ADU that weaves together the work and living modes of someone looking to work where they live.
A multi-purpose art studio and minimalist living space combine under one L-shaped roof - however, the entries to each are at opposite ends of the 'L' and a landscaped courtyard separates them. The same-but-separate concept creates a literal space between living and working, but it also creates mental space between the two - very healthy for someone working from home.
The maker space (at left) embodies a high-art garage and contains the various art and other activities (carbon-printing, photography, motorcycle restoration). The exterior walls are intentionally-rusting steel channels, banding a grooved stucco. The order of the horizontal steel bands and vertically-grooved stucco mimics carbon-printing and its’ clean, archival quality - yet maintains the handmade and messy borders. Tall ceilings, polished concrete floor, full-width utility sink, and deep-set windows create an atmosphere conducive to getting dirty, in a refined way.
The living space (at right) complements the work space and is pared down to create an edited lifestyle, per the homeowner’s desire to live more minimally as they embark on this creative lifestyle change. Clean details, careful views, and softened daylighting create a curated but relaxed living environment, in which they can enjoy the works they produce.
