Mature Garden

Adding to an established garden to create crisper lines, simpler flow, and more seasonal texture was the goal of this multi-year project. Mature hydrangeas and evergreens and grasses in clay soil left spring and summer with little color. Deer pressure combined with low irrigation needs and lack of sun created a restricted plant palette. Spring brings iris, bulbs, and woodland ephemerals that die back when the hydrangeas leaf out and bloom in late summer and fall. Revamping the line of the lawn to be less area with unmown edges where soils were wetter and too soggy to use for play created more biomass for habitat and a simple, elegant solution to drainage. Crisping up the mown-to-bed edge helped define space visually and provides clear definition for maintenance needs. Ensuring the lawn was well fed, aerated, and slice seeded annually by a soil expert as well as mown less frequently and left longer created a lusher, water-wise lawn area. Garden is cared for by Lynch Tree and Landscape.
