Native Rain Garden

Native plants of the high desert in Oregon can be planted in a manner that is wild, natural, or stylistic. This rock garden began with a random, natural approach and has been editing itself since. A variety of penstemon, scarlet gilia, fleabane, buckwheats, iris, blue flax, and bunch grasses were in the original planting. Humming birds love the scarlet gilia and spend all day dipping in their nectar.

This photograph shows yarrow in the foreground, sulfar buckwheat in the rear and pine leaf penstemon in the center. Very little water is used to keep these plants blooming through summer.

Here is a late winter photograph of the rock garden. You can see that it is holding water from a late rain. It is about 1 foot deep here. Most of the perennials are still dormant while the bunch grasses are beginning to get green. It is fun to watch it fill with rain water, ice over, and melt...

Here is the rock garden full of snow melt with snow all around it. it is probably 4' deep. The water covers most of the perennials for about a week or so. Sometimes several times a year. High Desert dry native perennials easily survive this brief submersion.
