North Ave Cape Cod
This was quite the transformation! This nearly 80 year old cape cod was in desperate need of a new kitchen but the owners and I agreed we really wanted to update while keeping the feel and design integrity of this old gem. The home had several original arches, so when we opened up the wall between the kitchen and family room,we mirrored the same style and curve of the original. We also removed a cased opening that led to the back hallway and addedthe arch to make an even more dramatic entry into the kitchen from the rear of the house. The owner wanted to keep the inviting feel of the rest of the home, so we went with the classic warmth of cherry cabinets and added some black accent pieces to break up the room. To honor the original kitchens pie-safe like storage area, we designed the pantry to be more of a piece of furniture, with a stunning capital on top and furniture feet on the bottom.
Then we picked out honed black absolute granite for the main countertops and a custom made soapstone farmsink. We decided to build in the kitchen table to do several things: add just a little more storage, create a small decorative niche, and to have a solid place to install the custom Boos Block, cherry butcher block table.
The owners wanted to add a shelf area in the new arch, so when we opened up the wall we brought it all the way to the floor and added the set of glass cabinets and wine rack that face the family room and extended the shelf over them creating a place to stand and be apart of the action in the kitchen, but without being in the traffic pattern. The warm feel of the room is really dramatic when you enter from any of the entrances and has become a major place to congregate.
As the project was winding down and the look of the kitchen was really taking shape, the owner decided that the adjacent bathroom was really looking even more outdated and so we quickly added that project to the scope! Again, wanting to update but maintain the period style we tried to do in the kitchen we went with this great beveled and crackled finished subway tile and the cool green glass accents and go higher up the walls and do the porcelain tile chair-rail accent at the top and around the window as casing. We added some great sconces to give her really nice beauty light to get ready. We also added heated floors to make the mosaic floor a comfy place to spend some time preparing for the workday.
