Owen Block Apartments (c.1882)

This iconic French Second Empire structure was saved from demolition by Indiana Landmarks in 2016 in collaboration with a grassroots campaign dubbed the “Blockheads”. It was converted into 15 market-rate apartment units by local contractor Architectural Renovators and stands as a testament to the community’s ability to form a collective voice regarding preservation issues. Our streetscape design provides building users with safe and convenient access to the basement and first floor apartment entries, while maintaining a sense of historical authenticity. A private courtyard is located snuggly between adjacent buildings. Intricate details from the original 1882 facade are replicated within the masonry of the site features, echoing the richness of the neighborhood’s architectural legacy.
