Park Avenue Duplex

This project was a gut renovation of a pre-war duplex apartment originally designed in the 1920's by the renowned architect Rosario Candela, Candela is known in New York for his gracious floor plans, and this apartment exemplifies his talent. When Weil Friedman was tasked with the renovation, the apartment had been stripped of it's original details. Our goal was to bring back the pre-war elegance while giving it a contemporary feel and making it a comfortable apartment for a family of four (plus two pet birds).

Park Avenue Duplex

Two large windows overlook Park Avenue in this pre-war duplex originally designed by Rosario Candela. Having been gutted of its pre-war detail in the 1980's, Weil Friedman started from scratch to re-introduce the traditional layout and components with a fresher, more contemporary design.

In this Living Room all new decorative components: radiator enclosures, cornices, window and door casings, base moldings, picture rail and chair rail were custom designed for the space. The goal was to maintain a pre-war sense of proportion with an updated fresh feel.

A wide doorway connects the Living Room and Family Room/Library. While one room has wood paneling and the other does not, the detailing of the two rooms is designed to maintain a sense of continuity between them.
