The original flagstone patio had reached the end of its service life, worn joints, uneven settling, and persistent weed intrusion between the stones. Our approach was to replace it with a large-format paver system set in a checkerboard pattern, using dark aggregate joints and steel edge restraints to create clean, defined lines throughout. A new mulched planting bed was introduced along the western edge to soften the transition and unify the space visually. The finished design offers a more contemporary aesthetic while significantly reducing long-term maintenance for the homeowner.
