Patios Portfolio

The following is a portfolio of various patios designed and built over the last thirty years. All were done in the Northern Virginia/Metro DC area. They reflect a variety of styles and budgets, from simple walkways to elaborate spaces. We feel this reflects our flexibility in design working with the style of architecture of the residence and site itself. Most importantly however we strive to work with the clients wishes and budget to create spaces that work for and reflect them.

End of formal patio surrounding a pool on a country estate. Urns were used as a colorful terminus to the view.

Simple yet elegant flagstone patio that also acts as an entrance to rear of residence. Flagstone is set in mortar on top of a concrete base.

Nice living space tucked into a narrow lot . Stone retention wall opened the space to allow more seating.

Simple yet welcoming entry into historic farmhouse. Stone wall was also used to divert drainage along both sides of residence. Overall space was design in response to flooding of residence due to drainage patterns. Wall and steps solve this nicely.

Entry and living space on historic farmhouse bordering the Shenandoah River. Wall was needed to divert storm water drainage to both sides of the residence. Lighted columns are a welcoming site as one pulls in along long secluded driveway.

Informal steps leading from yard in pool surrounds area. Brick steps work well with irregular stone patio as brick cap works well with stone wall.

Simple flagstone patio that works well with low level deck leading into residence. The patio and deck work well within the woodland nature of the site. Irregular flagstone path adds to the woodland feel as it approaches the patio.

Small paver patio acting as a landing for the deck leading to the rear entry of the residence. This shows a bit of history as this patio was completed over 25 years ago which explains the 'stop sign' paver pattern. This was the original pattern made available before pavers became popular...approx....

Simple flagstone entry to a very small townhouse in Old Town Alexandria. Simple straightforward line allows direct access to entry while the expanse to the left allows fro some user space in the front yard. Again shows my 'age' as this was completed over 25 years ago!

Overview of entry patio into small townhouse in Old Town Alexandria. Tree was set in center to provide scale, privacy fro 2nd story view of neighbors and of course shade. Patio was dry laid flagstone to allow simple removal of pavers as tree grows.

Small space designed to accommodate informal gatherings. Design included layout of patios, paths Screened Porch and fence beyond. All work was dry laid to accommodate growth of tree in central circle. Flagstone used to highlight circular area.

Informal flagstone patio and stone wall set the tone in a woodland garden area. Stone wall is rustic in nature, not showing mortar by design. Wall is actually a stone veneer facing a CMU block structure.

Entry landing framed by evergreens to create little sense of enclosure. Dry laid flagstone give the rural feel desired for this location.

Simple flagstone entry path bordered by evergreens. Path runs from side driveway to front door. Intent was to keep design simple and not compete with but to take advantage of the views afforded while walking the path.
