Pebble Beach Residence
A modestly scaled house in the International style inspired the landscape design for this sloping, one-acre site near the coast in Pebble Beach. The house uses ancient-looking materials in a modern design aesthetic. Landscaping is low key, using native plants with an emphasis on the color of foliage. not flowers. Texture and form create depth of field, drawing the eye through the landscaping. Architectural walls follow the lead of the house—crisp, geometric shapes constructed from antique Chinese stone. Elsewhere, stone walls that envelop planting are designed to appear as part of the land. The project includes an entry courtyard with a modern fountain, a rear courtyard with a square fire pit of limestone and gravel, and a spa with a teak deck set against a stone wall.
