Santa Lucia Preserve

Surrounded by 20,000 acres of wild Central Coast ranchlands, this site provides magnificent close and long-range views. The austerity of the expansive grasslands punctuated with heritage oaks, serves as the foundation for a design committed to simplicity and restraint.
Using the client’s minimal program to best advantage, SCDA’s design provides an axial entry drive leading to an elliptical motor court containing a single tree within a 28’ square reflecting pool. The sweeping vistas at the rear of the house are viewed from a crescent-shaped terrace topping a battered stone wall. A circulation path echoes the existing landform, following the grade and providing access from the house into the surrounding grasslands. This restorative approach in planting design enhances the architecture and preserves the timeless beauty of the site.
