Combined with a love of 18th century English and American furniture and working within a historic color palette of 18th century New England, this new home for a large family achieves a boldness of scale and color that is representative of the period. To offset the extremely large scale of the spaces, fabrics and furnishing were selected for their oversize patterning and sculptural qualities. The immensity of the rooms was tamed by using fabrics with large repeats and bold patterns. Drawing on George Washington’s Mt Vernon as well as 18th century period rooms for color inspiration, a careful modulation of rich blues was selected. The client’s love of blues and all of its variations was a primary inspiration for the house; this was offset by the many reds and neutrals which complement the varied blue palette. All surfaces, stripes on walls, and checks on floors as well as the 18th century style murals on the main stair case are hand painted and distressed to show an artisan’s hand work.
