Reader's Garden
It was an overgrown, narrow garden, envisioned by the client as a private reading nook that was well-lit but dry from the rain; a dining area that was bright yet esconced; and a private escape from the world (and neighbors). So we built on the back end of the property a custom cedar pergola protected by a transparent plexiglass roof, with an ipe deck and back wall: an inviting outdoor room raised a few steps from the ground. Cedar lattice fencing continues from pergola to house, punctuated by soft conifers. Plum trees, wisteria and knockout roses offer pale hues that reflect the evening light through the seasons. Annuals add seasonal color. The client adds the books.
