Letting the creativity flow.
Many clients come to us for a temporary makeover while they wait to move into another home. This delightful riverside apartment is a perfect example of clever, low budget interior design. With these projects, whether in New York or elsewhere, the key is to use as much of the existing furniture as possible and strengthen the overall theme with new pieces.
De-cluttering was the biggest task here. The apartment had no discernible theme with furniture, styles, colours and decorative pieces all fighting for attention. Our job was to create a consistent thread throughout the apartment.
To do this, we introduced a global theme and extended the chocolate colour scheme in the bedroom to the foyer and other areas of the apartment. Additionally, in the foyer, everything extraneous was removed and replaced with a centrepiece of an oriental off-white console, complemented by a latticework mirror hand-covered in a mosaic of Capis shell. These reflected our client’s taste for travel and global art.
The colour scheme was continued in the main living space where the modern sofa, which had nothing in common with the dining room chairs and table our client wanted to keep, was replaced with an L-shaped brown sofa. An Indian metal table and a Moroccan motif on the chair were added to reinforce the global feel.
A storage solution was added to the office space and the space gained allowed the insertion of two table lamps, which gave the area instant character. In the dining room a buffet with brushed brass accents and a contemporary, somewhat eclectic, but fun, mirror replaced two tall glass armoires that were no longer wanted. In the master bedroom, the inclusion of Frette quality sheets, two chests of drawers and 2 pagoda style lamps radically improved the entire look and feel of the room.
However, it was in the child’s bedroom that the biggest transformation took place. Out went the oversized sofa and in came two tall units to provide much needed storage space. Soft Indian carpet with silver motifs continued the global theme from elsewhere, yet we also managed to use the colour scheme chosen by the young occupant.
