Riverside Residence
We worked closely with the clients to update this 2,300 sf. apartment in a 1925 building on Riverside Drive with a modernist sensibility while preserving the integrity of the “Classic Seven” layout. A study and a larger kitchen were reconfigured from the former pantry, kitchen, maid’s room and bath. Taking inspiration from Aalto and Scarpa, clear forms, minimal ornament, a juxtaposition of different textures and attention to craftsmanship and detail create a home that animates not only the visual but all the senses. In the kitchen, Calacatta marble counters sit atop custom sycamore cabinets while stainless steel cabinets with frosted mirror-backed glass cabinets are situated above. The long hall leading to the kitchen is flanked by a teak bookcase on one side and a 20’ long floor to ceiling pantry with an appliance alcove. The floor is a combination of bamboo at the pantry and Calacatta marble in the main work-space. In the center is a Saarinen Calacatta marble Tulip table with walnut Cherner chairs for an eat-in kitchen. The Sub-Zero refrigerator and Wolf six-burner range with griddle in stainless steel compliment the palate of materials. Overall lighting is created using 12” diameter recessed fluorescent fixtures with incandescent under counter lights for task lighting. Three new windows complete a seamless transformation from a prewar aesthetic to a modernist vocabulary.
