San Diego Sanctuary

Architect Jimmy Sullivan’s Hillcrest Hideaway design is a testament to the indoor-outdoor living ideals that so many in Southern California cherish.

Situated in the affluent San Diego neighborhood of Hillcrest, the home was specifically designed by the CitiZen Design Studio architect for year-around entertaining and maximum energy efficiency, two reasons Sullivan turned to Western Window Systems for the home’s numerous windows and giant moving walls of glass.

“Indoor-outdoor living was really the core driving element of the whole project,” says Sullivan. “The home is a finely choreographed composition of both the interior and exterior spaces and made possible by the large expanses of glass windows and doors by Western Window Systems.”

Most of those large sliding-glass expanses seamlessly merge the interior of the house – most notably the kitchen, great room, and media room – with the huge backyard and pool area. In particular, the great room features a Series 600 Multi-Slide 90-Degree Door, in which two multi-slide doors meet at a corner and open away from each other to create an extra-large opening to the pool deck.

The dual-paned low-E glass used in the home’s multi-slide doors, pivot doors, fixed windows, and Series 670 hinged windows makes them perfectly suited to Sullivan’s design of the Hillcrest Hideaway as a net-zero home, meaning it creates just as much energy as it consumes. A rooftop array of 26 solar panels, automated skylights for natural ventilation, drought-tolerant landscaping, and a solar-heated saltwater pool are among the home’s other energy-efficient amenities.

“I am interested in working with clients who have an appreciation for modern design and an interest in the environment,” says Sullivan, whose CitiZen Design Studio is based in San Diego. “My design philosophy is centered on our relationship to nature and humans’ need to gravitate toward natural light. Western Window Systems helps me capture that relationship in a home.”
