Scheiner Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen remodel accomplished with many recycled materials done in a small 1940's Central District home. The design removed a closet that separated the crowded kitchen from the living room, opening up the space and washing natural light down via two skylight "sun tubes". New red and oak cabinets from IKEA and blue quartz countertops bring a vibrant playfulness to this home. Recycled timbers were used for the post and beam, and the bar counter was cut from a recycled glu-lam beam.

The recycled wood beam and post replace the bearing walls of the closet that was removed. Salvaged wood was also used for the open shelves to the left of the microwave.

This perspective demonstrates the additional space gained by removing the closet that existed between the new sink and beam/column. The added sight lines give the home a roomier feel. This closet was cutting off the kitchen from the living room, so we removed it and replaced it with the salvaged wood beam and post. Note the CAD renderings of various design options we created for the client taped to the closet door.
