Sears Kit House Redux

This little 1938, Sears Kit House grew from 970 SF to 1800 SF by removing the old hip roof and building up! A full second floor with cathedral ceilings, a loft space, bedroom, bath, new feature stair up and a small addition downstairs for a walk-in closet were all added to complete the expansion.
---Done in 3 phases over time, this home truly depicts classic and timeless design in a "Not So Big" setting. Old World textures were introduced to contrast with more modern elements by using expansive, rough-sawn beams, a soaring, central chimney element built with reclaimed brick of the period, and by reclaiming the old, narrow strip, oak flooring.
---The bungalow’s existing footprint was reworked to accommodate a new gourmet kitchen, an informal entry foyer & mudroom space, a first-floor Master Suite and a dual-use Powder Room by borrowing from existing bedroom and sunroom spaces. Living and dining areas were dramatically tipped toward the contemporary while being carefully integrated through the re-use of original hardware, doors and windows with depression era glass... to evoke a sense of time.
--The centerpiece of the kitchen is a live-edge, old-growth-oak island....hand-hewn from 1850’s barn beams to marry seamlessly with the alder, maple and painted custom cabinetry and provide a taste of Wabi-sabi. A large box bay extends the sink counter outward to connect the interior with the yard beyond and to introduce a roof system for the back entry.
---The final phase insists on a bold, contemporary palette throughout, cleaner lines and details plus a major upscaling of the central 'Statement Stairway' with custom furniture finishing and a new wool accent runner.... to blend the best of Old World Craft with contemporary sophistication.
