Serene Point Loma Custom Home

When building their new home in the La Playa neighborhood in Pt. Loma, this retired couple set out to create a serene space that oriented to the garden and downsize their living space. Coming from a spectacular, large view home in the same neighborhood, they were looking for a home that could still accommodate large groups when needed, but was a comfortable scale for everyday living. With a reduced size from their previous home, all of the rooms were expected to do double duty, particularly the kitchen.
Rather than have a kitchen, separate family room and breakfast room, we combined all three spaces into one. The working kitchen essentially functions like a galley making the work space very efficient. The balance of the space is then used as sitting area, eating area and walk-in pantry. The breakfast room was named La Matina by the homeowners as the imagined themselves sipping coffee in the sunlit room overlooking the ancient olive tree. The walk-in pantry was key to making the room work with minimal cabinet space. We opted to use less cabinets to make the room feel spacious and open.
The selection of materials was as important as the layout to create the serene monochromatic look. We used Wood-Mode Cabinetry with a custom brushed “warm concrete” finish. The countertops are Sea Pearl quartzite and Haze CaeserStone. The floors are a French white oak custom tinted to just the right shade of gray. The black windows and aluminum tiles add a punch to the scheme and the vintage ship lanterns over the island beckon friends and family to gather around.
