Shepherdstown, Traditional, Kitchen/Laundry/PR reshuffle

This was a small project (square footage-wise) but had a huge impact on the livability of this small 1800's home. Many instances of rot and poor workmanship were uncovered in walls, ceilings, and floors before and during the construction, all of which had to be repaired and brought up to code. The kitchen moved to the back of the home (in a new, larger addition) while a powder room and laundry room replaced the old kitchen. Renovations provided several opportunities to bring natural light into the existing windowless living room. During holidays and outdoor parties there's easy flow between the spaces now. The client's great finish selections made this project a real home run.

Before
The living room stove will remain but will be on a new hearth. The existing doorway to the right of the stove will be shifted closer to the stove; a second doorway will be added to the left of the stove. Both these doorways will lead into the new kitchen addition for a nice circular flow.

The living room has so much more natural light from adjacent spaces now! Updating the hearth and using a lighter floor helped too.

Before
The old kitchen was gutted for a relocated powder room, laundry area, and back door to the patio. New toilet goes where the coffeemaker is; new sink goes where the toaster oven is.
