Steamboat Run, Eclectic, Modernized 70's Rambler

A rambler built in an area with no code enforcement or inspections at the time was out of date and had numerous structural issues which were fixed during its big facelift. The staircase was moved, many walls were replaced with structural headers, windows were replaced, the kitchen was reimagined, the master bath got a luxurious new shower, and pretty much every other room was renovated in some fashion. On the basement level, a bar area was created, a home office and craft room were both added, and part of the unfinished basement was developed into an additional bedroom. What a dramatically different second life for this sweet river house!

AFTER: this window, at new sink, replaces the double-hung window over the original washer and dryer. The new kitchen utilized the old mudroom. The washer and dryer were relocated to a new closet where the top of the staircase used to be.

BEFORE: this twin casement was replaced by a wide single casement in the remodel, and the sink was moved several feet to the left, into the new corner of the enlarged kitchen.

The reinvented kitchen has casement windows now, and has been consolidated toward the front of the old kitchen's area. An island with counter overhang takes on the duty of breakfast table.

Yes, the "hallway" is still long, as evidenced by the original rug. However the openings on each side of it are much wider, so it doesn't feel nearly as confined as it originally did.

I chamfered the corner at the edge of the foyer to soften the transition into the original long hall. Here you can see the newly opened-up sitting area by the foyer.

Part of the project was to remove a wall from the existing study/guest bedroom off of the foyer in order to create a welcoming sitting room. Its closet was removed and built-in display shelves were added to the space. The twin windows were also replaced with long casements and a picture window.
