Sonoma County Hillside Property

Creative solutions allow greater use of the property as well as access to views while screening other areas for privacy. Goals were to create an environmentally sensitive meditative landscape using wood, hogwire and edible landscaping. Found iron railroad tie plates and spikes are re-purposed to provide a distinctive unusual cap for gate and trellis posts.

This round deck provides a focal point destination of of the primary circulation path. It cantilevers out over a steep slope to create a dramatic resting/ reading nook. Built in benches provide permanent seating and newly planted deciduous trees will provide more shade in summer and less in winter....

Hogwire and natural wood fence will patina naturally with age, minimizing maintenance. Concrete curb is the top of a wall, but reduced in width at the top to minimize it's presence. This fence doubles as a backup safety rail.

Wire supports affixed to concrete retaining wall allow roses to climb and eventually cover most of this concrete wall. Cedar fence separates a more utility area from the flower garden area.

Radial portion of trellis extends past the linear trellis behind, providing a visual barrier from downhill neighbors and a shaded seating area below. Vertical board screen is a repeated element elsewhere on the property.

A clean simple modern bridge anchored to boulders provides the experience of crossing a water way. Cobbled dry creek bed provides needed drainage from site and creates a temporal winter water feature. Plantings designed to enhance both the aesthetic and wildlife use as a riparian habitat.

Veggie garden beds step up the slope with the adjacent stairs. Fruit trees, perennial edibles and culinary herbs provide the backbone of this edible landscape. Sitting area at bottom of garden provides an area to rest and enjoy this beautiful, bountiful garden.
